This program offers mental health professionals an introduction to offering neurodiversity affirming counseling. The program explores basic terminology, the history of the neurodiversity movement and intersectional movements. The program explores necessary foundational topics such as depatholigizing ADHD & Autistic identity and understanding ableism, internalized ableism, and unlearning internalized ableism as a therapeutic tool.
Utilizing a visual presentation and conversational video & audio, the presenter facilitates the learning objectives.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away… therapists and psychiatrists were powerful allies in empowering patients to assertively and effectively use psychiatric treatment. This presentation will summarize current research evidence on how much impact the psychological meanings that psychiatric medications hold for patients have on their treatment response.
Therapists and psychiatric professionals will learn how to discuss medication with their patients in a way that cultivates patient attitudes towards medication that promote healing and combat shame while staying within the clinician’s scope of practice. This will include practical techniques for addressing resistance to taking medication, overuse of medication, and expectations of medication treatment.
